background information

history

What Chinatsu can recall of her family is very little. She knows she was born to two paleontologists, both very loving parents initially - but it was difficult to drag a baby around with them. She was born in Berlin, Germany, but her parents moved so often, it hardly mattered where she was born. Her passport states that she travelled throughout Europe: England, France, Italy, Sweden. However, eventually her parents decided that caring for a growing child in this manner was hardly beneficial, and before embarking on their next dig, they dropped six-year old Chinatsu at her mother's brother's house in Honolulu, Hawaii, promising to pick her up when this dig was over.

They never came back; instead, Chinatsu's parents became the numbers of people who had mysteriously gone missing over time, joining the ranks of took to looking at her uncle as her father; after all, she hardly knew anyone else. The maybe-orphan grew up happily in the United States, one of a rather large Japanese community situated on the island. Her uncle was glad; while some children might become despondent and jaded, Chinatsu instead exhibited a resilience and forgiveness for her parents. She refused to allow herself to become sad.

She was a good girl for her cheerful attitude, but the wanderlust was in her blood from the moment she was born. From a very young age, Chinatsu showed an interest in other countries and travelling, and it wasn't rare to find out that her biggest dream consisted of living in every country in the world. Her games as a child were often ones about exploring unknown areas, encountering the mysterious and the foreign. Even growing up, her interests were in the cultures around the world, never in something in mathematics (which would always be the bane of her existance) or English.

In school, Chinatsu made good with people relatively easy, probably because of her easy-going attitude and her constant smile. Though her acquaintances were plentiful, Chinatsu only really connected to her two best friends: two boys who she looked at as her brothers. Although, in retrospect, both admit to having liked her at one point (and she had liked both at different times in her life, too), she and her boys had learned to ease into the companionship of siblings rather than boys-and-girls. It was good that she had them, because China was something awkward growing up, and got teased a bit on her appearance. Without them, she felt completely lost, and it was with her two boys that she embarked on accomplishing her dream.

While the boys made their way through pilot school, Chinatsu worked at her new job as an airline attendant. Though hardly glamorous, Chinatsu enjoyed the fact she got to meet all sorts of people with her occupation, and the travelling it provided - free of charge! - was an incredibly joyous thing. Within a few years, she had travelled to so many places, it made her head spin. The regret of not going to attend college was far ousted by her happiness by realizing what she had wanted since she was a child.

When the pulse hit, Chinatsu was about to come home to Hawaii to visit her best friends; however, it was inevitable that instead she would be trapped in Tokyo, her last stop. When the situation became controlled (leaving her forever thankful to the Revival Project), Chinatsu was alarmed to find out that not only had her uncle not made it, but both her boys were missing. Distraught (and maybe running away from her new life), Chinatsu settled down in Tokyo, living on what her uncle had left her and she had saved up over the years.

personality

Chinatsu is, to be succintly described, a good friend. She is the kind of girl who will support you no matter what, and she is the kind of girl who will reach out to whoever needs her help. Her loyalty is unwavering. The type of people she's attracted to befriending are the type that state she is exactly what they do not need. But along with that friendly attitude is a streak of stubbornness, translating to the fact there is very little Chinatsu will be deterred from once she makes up her mind. She is not the type of person who often plays the hero, but she is deeply compassionate, and when she can, she tries to help out in her own little ways. She knows her own limitations.

She can be a bit insensitive sometimes; Chinatsu can become so focused on what she believes is important that she can completely steamroll over someone's feelings. She doesn't mean to, though; there's hardly a malicious bone in her body. What usually happens is that when she does try to help someone, she can get so set on uncovering the past that the idea they don't want the past uncovered doesn't even occur to her. However, when scolded, Chinatsu will take it with a smile and try to make amends.

Ever the optimist, she has a hard time dealing with practicality when it comes to things that are depressing or sad. She really does believe that her parents, along with her best friends, are still alive out there. It's this sort of mind-set that contributes to her image as an unrealistic dreamer. Her motto is that everything is possible. If there's even the slightest chance that her parents are alive, in her mind, they are alive. Subconsciously, it might be this belief which contributes to her constant need for movement; maybe, deep down, Chinatsu is trying to find them.

Chinatsu can be considered a bit of a tomboy. Despite her feminine personality and appearance, she's more interested in sports, and growing up, she's always been able to relate with boys better. Her femininity is something almost foreign to her; she often shows a bit of doubt when confronted with a romantic situation, and most flirting can pass right over her head. What does get to her is someone's constancy - since she feels she lacked the consistancy of having someone by her side, it's easy to get her to connect this way. Appealing to her the usual way, with flowers and chocolates, succeeds in flattering her, but in the end, it really doesn't amount to much when it comes down to her feelings.

powers

water manipulation — Chinatsu possesses water manipulation, though she says sea water is easiest for her, and when she creates water herself, it is often salty. With this power, China can manipulate water to any state of matter she wishes (solid, liquid, gas), as well as fix temperature to a minute degree. She is also able to create water out of seemingly nothing by drawing together the surrounding moisture in the atmosphere. China can levitate water as well as form it to any shape she wishes.

lockpicking — Chinatsu's touch instantly unlocks any locks, whether it be one on a door, a piece of luggage, or a gate: anything at all. Her power also translates into a form of technopathy, undoing the technological 'lock' that a private post entails, meaning she can read all private posts. This power does not necessarily manifest into a physical key, as mentioned before; just Chinatsu touching the lock undoes it.

weapon birthing — Chinatsu can generate up to two swords from her arms, much like Arash from x/1999. These swords are typically katana-like in style, though a little shorter to compensate for China's own small size. With the 'birth' of these weapons, Chinatsu instantly gains professional ability to use them, as if she has been studying for many years. She is particularly skilled with series attacks.

relationships

family

Tamaki Katase — Her father. He's been missing for years. Missing.
Chihiro Katase — Her mother. She's been missing too. From what Chinatsu knows, she's the spitting image of her mother. Missing.
Takeshi Kurihara — Her uncle. Chinatsu considers him her father, and she treated him as such. They were incredibly close. His death was hard for her. Deceased.

the trio

Thanks to Sora, the trio is reunited and lives together in China's apartment!

Ronan — The oldest of the three, Ronan was the one who decided to change their dreams into reality. China has always teased him mercilessly, and he's always been a bit of a smart aleck back. They have an understanding between them, obviously. She loves him so so so much.
Boy #2 — Her other boy. He felt like he had to measure up to Ronan, but he showed he had his own strengths. He has a pure heart and an adventurous spirit, and very little seems to get him down. Sometimes, he could be a bit thick though. Living with her in Japan.

guy friends

Ayumu — She's served him on a few flights, actually! China totally didn't know he was famous. Most of his flirting went right over her head, but he's a good guy. He's one of her few friends in Tokyo right now.
Inoue-kun — A community friend! They seemed to get along really well, and talked about all sorts of things, but a lot about music! She's promised to use her employee discount for him if and when he comes to Tokyo, and he's going to let her stay at his parent's hotel in return.
Ding Dong — She met him over the community and had no idea he was some sort of Korean superstar. But now she knows he's totally talented! He's always a good guy to talk to, and she feels pretty at ease with him. He kind of spoils her, in a way, but she doesn't mind too much. A lunch buddy and now a pretty good friend! The best part is that she obviously got him onto the dark side with her.
Sora — A really nice Korean guy she met over the network. She let it slip to him she was looking for her friends, and he was nice enough to come to Japan and grant her wish. China feels super-grateful for Sora's favor, and she considers him sort of a friend now because of it.
Jiro — A chill guy she met while working. He came in every once in a while, so China learned his face and worked up the courage to start up a conversation. Now he's one of her favorite customers, and he invited her to a Blur concert! So exciting.
Amada-san — She just met him, but he's a really cool guy! It's pretty impressive to know a real pokemon master. He's also in a band called Genkaku, which she's going to look up.
Mingy — Met him before she left the islands in favor of becoming a flight attendant. They were both pretty sensitive at the time, so they became friends easily. She thinks he's a riot, and his adventurous nature is just like hers!
Shimizu — Met him over the community. He may seem a bit terse and withdrawn, but China loves a challenge - mostly, because she's lonely too. She likes to visit him when he's working, and he even visited her once on White Day to give her chocolate! Totally blew her mind.

gal pals

Aya — A really nice girl who often goes to Kinokuniya. China quickly learned her name and face, and now she often wastes her time by talking to Ayaka when she spies the girl around on her shift. She thinks she's madly talented with her art.
Hikki — omgomgomgomgomg. They're actually friends and it blows China's fangirl mind. For being an awesome superstar like she is, Hikki is super down-to-earth and spunky. China likes her a lot, minus foiling her Africa plans.
Kallie — A friend of hers from Hawaii! Kallie's always there to listen to China when she needs to vent. She's one of her few girl friends. Sometimes that dose of estrogen is really helpful. NPC.
Sayuri — Originally, the two girls met on the network, but since the charity games, they're also real-life acquaintances too. Sayuri was nice enough to lend China the best game ever, which makes China like her. A lot.

romantic connections

Jason Lee — China's first serious boyfriend; they dated her senior year. After tutoring her in math for all of junior year, Jason finally asked China out on a date, and the rest was history. He always made sure to take it slow with her, and because he was so thoughtful, China feels like he was her first love.
Sean Petrelli — One of the pilots she often worked with before the infection. They had just, tentatively, made their relationship more serious before his plane went down during the pulse, and China doesn't like to talk about him too much because of it. Deceased.

others

The Take-Out Couple — From the moment China's plane crashed into Tokyo and she was stranded in the island nation of Japan, she has known the take-out couple. Through the year or so she's been in the city, she became quite close with them and came to look at them as if they were parents she had never had. She didn't know their names, but they knew hers, and they had never had children or grandchildren. Their death during the firestorms in Tokyo really shook her, and she's had trouble coping. Deceased.
Aubrey Blackwell — Doesn't know her name, but please gtfo Ronan. ):
Norah — Just recently met her on the community. She's pretty friendly and easy to talk to.
Nakashima — Met her on the community! China hopes she figures out American slang soon.
